Every Easter there is a gathering of individuals who are determined to take on the marathon challenge that is known as, The Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race! Yes, they come from all over the world to do this!!
It's only a little race of some 125 miles and the start is split over two days ..... Good Friday for those individual and team paddlers that are looking to complete the course over the 4 days, whilst Easter Saturday is for those that are going to take on the challenge in one hit (teams only for this one)! The weather on Good Friday was just fabulous, but oh boy, unfortunately the forecast was correct and it was horrendous for the Saturday start and was only going to get worse as the weekend progressed, so much so that on the Monday, the race had to be called off for safety reasons ..... Storm Katie was making her presence felt in London but that didn't stop some individuals completing .... not on the water I hasten to add, on foot, bike / tandem! Sheer determination to finish and who can blame them after all the hours of training that had been put in for this one event!!
Now, it has been a few years since I have been out on the water, and when asked if I was going to take on the challenge, I just shrugged and replied that it would be rather difficult for me to take the pictures. I don't think I got away with that one! But I will go on to say that I have covered this race a number of times now and every time I am in awe of those that partake in such an adventure, so you never know, perhaps one year, I just might!
